About the Membership

The FAWE membership has three categories – Full members, Associate members and Affiliate members.

The FAWE Full membership consists of high level education policy makers including female Ministers and deputy ministers of Education, Vice Chancellors and Deputy Vice Chancellors. The category of Full members also includes Prominent Educationalists

Associate members include male ministers of education and former female Ministers of education.

The National Chapters are affiliate members of FAWE Africa.

At the national level members of FAWE National chapters include educationists, gender activists, researchers, teachers, girls and boys committed to promoting gender equality in education.

About the National Chapters

FAWE has National Chapters in 32 countries in sub Saharan Africa.

A FAWE National Chapter is a locally registered NGO which is formally affiliated to FAWE. Chapters work closely with the Ministry of Education and other education stakeholders to promote access, retention and performance of girls at the national level.


About the Programmes
Influencing Policy

FAWE's major role is to influence education policy in favour of gender equality. FAWE works closely with policy makers at all levels to ensure that policies address gender constraints in education and promote gender equality in access, retention and performance.

Advocacy

FAWE undertakes various advocacy activities aimed at sensitizing policy makers, parents and communities, teachers, girls and boys on the importance of girls' education and the need for action to eliminate gender inequalities in education.

FAWE also conducts action research on emerging issues in girls' education through the FAWE Resident Guest Researcher Programme ( FRGRP)

Demonstrative Interventions

FAWE demonstrates what works on the ground in improving access, retention and performance for girls.

FAWE Demonstrative interventions include: Bursaries for needy girls, promoting participation of girls in SMT, empowerment of girls and boys for gender equality, managing sexual maturation, transforming schools into gender responsive environments, training teachers into gender responsive pedagogy, guidance and counseling, empowering youth to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS and creating a gender responsive environment at the Higher Education level.

Replication & Mainstreaming

The best practices that emerge from FAWE; Demonstrative Interventions are used to influence replication and mainstreaming into the wider national education systems.

Todate seven (7) best practices have emerged and consultations held with Ministries of Education and action taken for the replication and mainstreaming of some of them.
