About FEMSA

The Female Education in Mathematics and Science in Africa (FEMSA) Project is a project of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Working Group on Female Participation and is hosted by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE).  FEMSA activities are funded by a consortium of Donors headed by NORAD.

Phase I of FEMSA, which lasted for two years and involved Cameroon, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda, ended on 31st December 1997.  After a six-month transition phase, a three-year Phase II was initiated on the 1st July 1998.

In Phase II, eight new countries : Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Swaziland and Zambia, were admitted to FEMSA, thus giving the project an interesting mix of Anglophone, Francophone and Lusaphone countries.  Ghana did not participate in Phase II.

FEMSA aims at improving the participation and performance of girls in Science, Mathematics and Technical (SMT) subjects at the primary and secondary school levels.
