| Background
FAWE is constituted of 32 National Chapters, which operate
largely as autonomous legal entities registered as national
NGOs across sub-Saharan Africa in Anglophone, francophone
and lusophone countries.
Each chapter comes up with its own work programme with activities
chosen according to the needs of the local context. As such,
the activities undertaken by National Chapters differ from
chapter to chapter
In addition, National chapters mobilize resources for their
work programmes for various donors. There are grants at the
FAWE Regional Secretariat, which the National chapters can
also access through submission of proposals for some of their
programmes.
The Regional Secretariat extends financial and technical
support to the Chapters
Through its National Chapters, FAWE has been able to form
a network of partners in education across the continent, with
a recognized capacity to promote the education of girls and
women at all levels.
FAWE's ultimate objective with respect to the National Chapters
is to support their growth and enhance their capacity to influence
policy and implement interventions to address the challenges
facing the education of girls and women in their countries.
The FAWE National Chapters are perceived to be key players
and strategic partners with the capacity to influence policy
change at the national level, and therefore, bring about broad-based
and sustainable change in favour of girls' education
National Chapters are expected to have capacities in four
areas:
-
Policy analysis. Capacities "to influence the formulation
and adoption of education policies which involve the review
of policies, collation, analysis and application of data".
-
Advocacy. "Skills to build awareness and consensus
through advocacy on the social and economic advantage
of girls' education, including advocacy at all levels".
-
Demonstration. "Capacity to undertake and support
innovative demonstration and experimental programmes that
promote girls' participation in education".
-
Replication. "Capacity to convince stakeholders
to replicate such programmes to scale".
Role of FAWE National
Chapters
The principle role of the National Chapters is to identify
priority education issues at national level, and conceptualize
solutions to these challenges. The National Chapters are well
placed to perform this task, as they have the capacity to
reach the grassroots.
Structure of the
FAWE National Chapters
The FAWE National Chapters are governed by a National Executive
Committee elected through the Chapter's General Assembly.
The Executive Committee is responsible for developing the
Chapter's Work Programme, guiding the operation of the Chapter,
and developing strategies for addressing the educational issues
in their country and providing technical assistance when the
need arises.
