Friends of FAWE hosts first US benefit event in support of girls’ education in Africa

fofawe_logoFAWE’s US-based affiliate Friends of FAWE (FoF) hosted its first benefit event in New York, US, on 29 November 2011 as part of its mandate to increase awareness, develop partnerships and raise funds to support FAWE’s work of educating girls and women across sub-Saharan.

Hosted by television news personality Cheryl Wills of NY1 News, the event brought together a number of leading figures in education, human rights and international relations, including guest speaker Dr. Changu Mannathoko, UNICEF Senior Education Policy Advisor; Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Josephine Ojiambo, Kenya’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations; and Hon. Dr. Marcella Maxwell, educator and former New York City Commissioner on Human Rights.

In her address, Dr. Changu Mannathoko praised FAWE's efforts at achieving gender equality in education and contributing to educational opportunities for young girls throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Friends of FAWE plans to organise a series of symposia on the status of girls' education in Africa in 2012 to further engage with US-based supporters on quality education and gender equality in education in Africa.
