FAWE in regional consultative meeting on priorities for East Africa

FAWE participated in the Ministerial SDG Forum for East Africa that was held 15-16 February 2017 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This meeting was convened by UNESCO, the SDG4 co-conveners and the Ministry of Education in Tanzania as a continuation of the regional consultative process in which countries have been preparing national SDG4 roadmaps to support the implementation and monitoring of their National Education Strategic Plans, and also in view of outlining and agreeing on priorities at the regional level.
The discussions revolved around the themes of skills for work, literacy and lifelong learning; education in emergency situations and partnerships for education financing. FAWE Africa made a presentation around Gender equity and inclusion in SDG 4.
The SDG 4 Forum was attended by 13 Ministers from Eastern Africa, UNESCO and the SDG4 co- conveners mainly to discuss priorities and policy recommendations for a regional roadmap for the implementation of the SDG4- Education 2030 agenda and linkages with other SDGs.
Participants included ministers from Comoros, Djibout, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The Swedish Ambassador to Tanzania H.E Katarina Rangnitt spoke about the need to empower Young people by equipping them with relevant skills for competence. Speaking at the same meeting Mrs Victoria Akyeampong, UNHCR Head Regional Services Center discussed education in emergency situations with a special emphasis on refugees and immigrants. These sentiments were echoed by Ms. Ann–Therese Ndong Jatta, Director of UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa.
The SDG4 co-conveners were UNDP, UNICEF, ILO, UNFPA, UN Women, UNHCR and the World Bank.
