FAWE Chairperson is elected Chair of the Commonwealth Foundation

FAWE Chairperson Hon. Simone de Comarmond has been elected Chairperson of the Commonwealth Foundation, the intergovernmental body mandated to work with civil society organisations to promote democracy, sustainable development and inter-cultural understanding across the Commonwealth.

Ms de Comarmond, former Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Transport (1993-2003) and Minister of Education (1989-1993), was nominated by the Seychelles Government as a candidate for the position of Chair of the Commonwealth Foundation. The only female candidate, she was chosen by the Foundation’s Board of Governors as its new Chairperson by consensus on 2 October 2008.

She will serve a two-year term commencing 1 January 2009 and will be based in the Seychelles.

Commenting on her election, Ms de Comarmond said, ‘I very much look forward to being of service to the Foundation, which is a uniquely valuable organization… There has never been a more important time for citizens to engage closely with governments in addressing social, economic and environmental challenges.’

Ms de Comarmond was re-elected for a second term as FAWE Chairperson at the organisation’s 7th General Assembly in July 2008. She said, ‘I see the new role as complimentary to that of FAWE Chair’ and vowed to ‘lead the Commonwealth Foundation to greater heights and to uphold the good name of the Commonwealth.’
