FAWE Uganda mobilises business community to support girls’ education

FAWE Uganda organised Girls’ Education Week from 8 to 14 August 2009 to mobilise support among the local business community to support girls’ education in the country.

The objective of the event, organised under the theme Increased Investment in Girls’ Education - A Celebration of African Women’s Leadership through Girls’ Education in Uganda, was to advocate for active support for and increased investment in girls’ education with a view to producing more African women leaders in various fields in the long term. It also sought to build capacity for accelerating EFA at the grassroots level and to share with funding partners some of FAWE Uganda’s successful initiatives for achieving gender parity in education, such as bursaries for underprivileged girls and greater community involvement in the provision of education.

The event highlighted the status of girls’ education in Uganda; analysed Ugandan education policies for gender-responsiveness; and shared the conclusions of this analysis with policy-makers and key education stakeholders to inform the design of appropriate, evidence-based interventions to enhance girls’ education and accelerate progress towards EFA.

Events during Girls’ Education Week included:

  • Regional girls’ education investment dialogues in the eastern and northern parts of the country to garner financial support from the local business communities;
  • Launch of FAWE Uganda’s Girls’ Higher Education Scholarship Programme to support increased access for girls to higher education and provide continuity for the thousands of beneficiaries, both girls and boys, who have been supported by FAWE Uganda through secondary school over the past 10 years;
  • Inauguration of FAWE Uganda’s Girls’ Education Endowment Fund for long-term sustainability of the National Chapter’s programmes; and
  • A national conference on girls’ education in Africa, with particular focus on Uganda, giving schoolgirls the opportunity to share their views on the issues affecting their education.

Activities also included compilation of data on enrolment and retention at primary and secondary school in selected districts for a report on the status of girls’ education; a campaign to enrol out-of-school children into primary and secondary school; and support to newly enrolled children to remain in school.
